Here in Australia we are fortunate to have some of the best and most attractive wine producing regions on the planet. The fabulous Margaret River in WA makes world class Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, Tasmania produces quality Pinot Noir and sparkling wines, the Hunter Valley in NSW has great Semillon and Shiraz wines, SA’s Barossa Valley has superb Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon and the Yarra Valley has excellent Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Given that we have such extensive and varied wine regions, what could be better for a girls’ weekend away than a short break indulging in great food and wine in stunning countryside?
The Hunter Valley in NSW, for example, really is made for weekend getaways with friends. The scenery is delightful – rolling vineyards dotted with a great combination of well-known, large-scale wine producers and smaller, boutique wineries. As a major tourist attraction, Hunter Valley accommodation comes in all shapes and sizes and caters to all budgets. If you’re looking for big hotel style amenities then perhaps you and your girlfriends should look at something like the Cypress Lakes Resort or one of the Peppers Resorts. Another option is to take rooms in a cozy bed and breakfast or to stay in boutique winery accommodation – a big plus if you plan to have a few drinks! Of course, many people like the freedom of self-catering on weekend getaways with friends and there are plenty of holiday rentals, from farmhouses and cottages to cabins and villas, to choose from.
Another major bonus of a winery holiday is that the entertainment is easily arranged for you and your girlfriends. An easy thing to do is to book seats one of the many wine tours run in all the wine producing regions. Often you can arrange to be picked up and dropped off at (or near) your accommodation, meaning that you can enjoy wine tasting without worrying about driving. And, of course, with all those wonderful cellar doors to visit, you’re sure to find a special bottle to share with your friends over dinner.
And let’s not forget that many winemaking areas also have fantastic day spas and health retreats, for those who wish to mix their gourmet getaway with some full on pampering. If you’re planning girls’ weekend away, what could be better than staying where you can spend one day touring wineries and another experiencing a relaxing massage and rejuvenating facial and other beauty treatments at a sophisticated day spa in the vines.
Winery breaks are a particularly good choice if you’re celebrating as a group. Important dates like an important birthday, graduation or a hen’s party are best spent with a big bunch of girlfriends in a location with lots to do, good restaurants and a decent selection of accommodation. Popular places like the glorious Margaret River, pretty Clare Valley and lovely Yarra Valley are all ideal for such weekends away. In fact, some ladies love their time spent away together so much that they choose to make it a regular occurrence and try to have a holiday with their girlfriends every year.
