We will be adding pages on specific destinations as time goes on, but for now, here is a quick overview of some of the sights of Victoria.
Melbourne – home to the Melbourne Cup horse race, the Boxing Day Test at the MCG and our homebred Australian Football League, Melbourne is a diverse mix of high art, sporting events, fashion and fantastic food. Acknowledged as Australia’s city of culture, Melbourne has plenty of art galleries and exhibitions all year round, though the big draw is Melbourne Winter Masterpieces in the colder months. Many people plan a weekend getaway to Melbourne around a sporting occasion or art show and throw in dinner at one of the city’s superb restaurants. For a girls’ weekend away, Melbourne is a great destination with its groovy shopping districts, funky cafes and bars and vibrant nightlife.
Mornington Peninsula – a winning combination of excellent wineries, fine food and local produce and some lovely beaches makes the Mornington Peninsula an obvious short break favourite for tired Melbournites. Many families have holiday houses in popular seaside towns like Sorrento, Portsea and Dromana but there are lots of beach houses and campsites to choose from if you don’t have your own holiday home and inland, places like Red Hill have some gorgeous cottages and other rental properties.
Yarra Valley – Victoria’s other big wine region, the Yarra Valley is a sublime slice of wineries and fruit-ladened vines, boutique accommodation and wonderful eateries showcasing the excellent local produce. Famous for its Pinots, Sparkling wines and Chardonnays, the Yarra Valley is ideal for a romantic getaway with someone special.
Great Ocean Road – this stretch of road has it all – stunning coastline, glorious, sandy beaches and lots of charming seaside communities to explore along the way. Surfers love Bells Beach, whilst spots like Lorne, Torquay and Anglesea are popular with families, couples, mates and everyone in between. One of the best Great Ocean Road getaways is to hire a flash car and drive the coastal road, stopping wherever you like for a swim or a snack.
Daylesford & Hepburn Springs – this is spa country! Surrounded by tranquil pastures, Daylesford and Hepburn Springs have the largest concentration of mineral springs in the country. Both places are hugely popular for romantic weekends away full of indulgence and relaxation. Accommodation in the area ranges from spa hotels and luxury Bed and Breakfast cottages to cozy cabins and delightful hotel rooms. However, aside from the stylish places to stay, ‘olde worlde’ charms of the towns and many fine restaurants and cafes dotted about, most visitors go to Daylesford to be pampered at a day spa, making for a divine getaway.
Victoria Country Towns – If you wish to escape Melbourne all together, there is much to see and do in regional Victoria. Towns like Ballarat and Bendigo provide fascinating insights into the Australian history and the glory days of Victoria’s goldfields. The High Country is yet another wine growing area and communities like Falls Creek, Rutherglen and Beechworth are fabulous for a short break. Mildurra is a little piece of the Mediterranean, transported down under and in contrast, Mount Buller, Mount Hotham and Dinner Plain offer weekend getaways with skiing and snowboarding in the winter months and terrific scenery the rest of the year.
